    When a printer error occurs, the Alarm lamp flashes orange as shown below. The number of flashes indicates the type of error that has occurred. Count the flashes and take the appropriate action to correct the error.

    A printer problem has occurred.
    Disconnect the printer cable from the printer, turn the printer off, and then unplug the printer from the power supply.
    Plug the printer back in and turn the printer back on.
    <Important>
    When a message regarding the protective material appears on the computer screen, it is possible that the protective material for the print head holder remains attached. Turn the printer off, then check the inside of the printer. If the protective material remains attached, remove it and turn the printer back on.
    If the problem is not resolved, contact the service center.

    Two flashes: Printer is out of paper/Paper does not feed/Disc Tray is not in place/Printable disc is not placed on the Disc Tray
    Reload the paper in the Rear Tray or Manual Feed Tray and press the RESUME/CANCEL button on the printer.
    Make sure that you are using the Disc Tray supplied with the printer ("H" is on the upper side) is in place. Properly place the printable disc on the Disc Tray, attach the Disc Tray again, then press the RESUME/CANCEL button on the printer. For details on how to place the Disc Tray, see [ Attaching/Removing the Disc Tray ].

    Three flashes:Paper Output Tray is closed/Feed Slot Cover is opened/Manual Feed Tray is in the paper jam clearing position/Paper jams/Paper is loaded in the Manual Feed Tray
    • If the Paper Output Tray is closed, open it. The printer resumes printing.
    • If the Feed Slot Cover is opened, close the cover slowly and press the RESUME/CANCEL button on the printer. The printer resumes printing.
    • If the paper is loaded on the Manual Feed Tray, remove the paper from the Manual Feed Tray, then press the RESUME/CANCEL button on the printer.
    • If the Manual Feed Tray is in the paper jam clearing position, return the tray to the paper feed position and press the RESUME/CANCEL button on the printer.
    If the error still remains, paper may be jammed. Remove the jammed paper, reload paper in the printer, and then press the RESUME/CANCEL button on the printer.

    Four flashes : The ink tank is not installed./Ink tank is not installed properly./Ink may have run out.
    • The ink tank is not installed.
    Install the ink tank.
    • If the lamp on the ink tank is not lit, the ink tank may not be installed properly.
    Install an appropriate ink tank.
    • If printing is continued, the ink may run out.
    You are recommended to replace the ink tank.
    If printing is in progress and you want to continue printing, press the printer's RESUME/CANCEL button. Then printing can continue. In this case, if the ink runs out during printing, printing will be interrupted even if the paper is half-printed, and the paper will be ejected.
    REFERENCE
    • If multiple ink lamps are flashing, refer to [ Checking the Ink Status ] and confirm the status of each ink tank.

    Five flashes:Print Head is not installed/Joint Lever is not closed properly/Print Head is defective
    Follow the directions given in your setup manual to install the Print Head.
    If the Print Head is already installed, remove the Print Head once and then reinstall it.
    If the Joint Lever is not closed properly, close it following the procedure below.
    1. Open the Top Cover and Head Cover.
    2. Lift the Joint Lever securely.
    REFERENCE
    • Lift the Joint Lever until it clicks into place.

    3. Close the Head Cover and the Top Cover.
    If the error is still not resolved, the Print Head may be damaged. Contact the service center.

    Six flashes:The Inner Cover is opened/Inner Cover is closed
    When you start printing on paper, close the Inner Cover, then press the RESUME/CANCEL button on the printer.
    Open the Inner Cover, properly place the Disc Tray again, then press the RESUME/CANCEL button on the printer to dismiss the error.
    Do not open or close the Inner Cover while printing is in progress. This may damage the printer.
    REFERENCE
    • The Inner Cover is not present depending on the country or region of purchase.

    Seven Flashes:Ink tank is not installed in the correct position
    • Some ink tanks are not installed in the correct position. (The lamps on the ink tanks flash.)
    • More than one ink tanks of the same color are installed. (The lamps on the ink tanks flash.)
    Confirm that the ink tanks are installed in the appropriate positions.
    Replacing an Ink Tank
    When you need to replace ink tanks, follow the procedure below.

    Eight flashes:Ink absorber is almost full
    The ink absorber is almost full.
    Press the printer's RESUME/CANCEL button to continue printing. Contact the service center.

    Nine flashes:The printer has not received a response from the digital camera. The digital camera or digital video camcorder connected is not compatible with this printer
    • Check the device connected to the printer. Printing photos directly is possible only with a PictBridge compliant device.
    • A communication time out occurs if an operation takes too long or if it takes too much time to send data. This may cancel printing. In such cases, disconnect and reconnect the USB cable.When printing from a PictBridge compliant device, depending on the model or brand of your device, you may have to select a PictBridge compliant print mode on the device before connecting it to the printer. You may also have to turn on your device or select Play mode manually after connecting the device to the printer. Perform necessary operations before connecting your device referring to its instruction manual.If the error is still not resolved, check if you can print another photograph.

    Ten flashes:Paper Output Tray is in the paper jam clearing position
    Return the Paper Output Tray to the paper output position, then press the RESUME/CANCEL button on the printer.

    Eleven flashes:Automatic Print Head Alignment failed/The Page Size setting does not match the size of the paper loaded in the printer
    When performing Automatic Print Head Alignment:
    • Print Head nozzles are clogged. Press the RESUME/CANCEL button to dismiss the error, and print the nozzle check pattern to check the status of the Print Head.
    • Paper of size other than A4 or Letter is loaded. Press the RESUME/CANCEL button to dismiss the error, then load two sheets of A4/Letter-sized Canon Matte Photo Paper MP-101 with the printing side (whiter side) facing UP in the Rear Tray. For Automatic Print Head Alignment, always load paper on the Rear Tray.
    • The Paper Output Slot is exposed to strong light. Press the RESUME/CANCEL button to dismiss the error, and then adjust your operating environment and/or the position of the printer so that the Paper Output Slot is not exposed directly to strong light.
    After carrying out the above measures, if the problem continues after aligning the Print Head again, press the RESUME/CANCEL button to dismiss the error, and then perform Manual Print Head Alignment.

    When printing the nozzle check pattern or performing Manual Print Head Alignment:
    Other than A4/Letter-sized paper is loaded.
    Press the RESUME/CANCEL button on the printer to clear the error, and load A4/Letter-sized paper in the Rear Tray. Then try performing again.
    When printing the nozzle check pattern or performing Manual Print Head Alignment, be sure to set the paper to the Rear Tray.

    When performing an ordinary print job:
    • Press the RESUME/CANCEL button on the printer to clear the error. Then check the Page Size setting in the Page Setup sheet in the printer driver and load paper that is the same size as the setting and try printing again.
    • Set the printer not to detect the width of the paper using the printer driver. To set the printer driver not to detect the width of the paper, open the printer driver setup window, and in Custom Settings under the Maintenance sheet, clear the Detect paper width check box, and then click OK. To open the printer driver setup window, see Opening the Printer Driver Setup Window.
    * Select the Detect paper width check box again once printing is complete, and then click OK.
    • Press the RESUME/CANCEL button on the printer to clear the error. Then check the Paper Size setting in the Page Setup dialog and load paper that is the same size as the setting and try printing again.
    • Set the printer not to detect the width of the paper using the Canon IJ Printer Utility. To set the printer not to detect the width of the paper, open the Canon IJ Printer Utility, select Custom Settings in the pop-up menu, clear the Detect paper width check box, and then click Apply.
    * Select the Detect paper width check box again once printing is complete, and then click Apply.

    Twelve flashes:Tank Cover is opened./Cannot open the Tank Cover
    If the Tank Cover is opened when printing, close the Tank Cover of both right side and left side securely.
    If you cannot open the Tank Cover to replace the ink tank, make sure that there is not any obstacle in front of the Tank Cover. If there is, remove the obstacle and press the Tank Cover Open button again.

    Thirteen flashes:Ink level cannot be detected
    The remaining level of the ink cannot be correctly detected. (The lamp on the ink tank flashes.) Press the Tank Cover Open button, and then replace the ink tank. Printing will restart.
    An ink tank that was once empty is installed. Printing under the current condition will disable the system cleaning required to maintain both printer and print quality.
    If you want to continue printing, you need to release the system cleaning function. To release this function, press and hold the printer's RESUME/CANCEL button for at least 5 seconds, and then release it.*
    * With this operation, releasing the system cleaning function is memorized.
    If you release the system cleaning function, printing trouble such as unwanted lines or the complete stopping of ink ejection may occur.
    Also, printing under the current condition may cause a malfunction or trouble because the print head will be damaged.
    Please be advised that Canon shall not be liable for any malfunction or trouble caused by release of the system cleaning function or refilled ink tanks.
    REFERENCE
    • If the system cleaning function is disabled, the remaining ink level cannot be displayed correctly on the printer status monitor.

    Fourteen Flashes:Ink tank cannot be recognized
    The ink tank cannot be recognized. (The lamp on the ink tank is off.)
    Replace the ink tank.

    When you need to replace ink tanks, follow the procedure below.

    Fifteen Flashes:Ink tank cannot be recognized
    The ink tank cannot be recognized. (The lamp on the ink tank is off.)

    Sixteen Flashes:Ink has run out
    • While printing:
    The ink has run out. (The lamp on the ink tank flashes.)
    Printing was interrupted and the paper was ejected because printing under the current condition may damage the printer.
    Press the Tank Cover Open button, and then replace the ink tank. Printing will restart from the next page.
    • While printing or cleaning:
    The ink has run out. (The lamp on the ink tank flashes.)
    Printing, cleaning, or other operation was interrupted because printing under the current condition may damage the printer.
    Press the Tank Cover Open button, and then replace the ink tank. When the ink tank is replaced, printing restarts, or cleaning or other operation resumes.

    Seventeen flashes:System cleaning cannot be performed
    • When system cleaning started automatically:
    The ink remaining level is not enough to perform the system cleaning function.
    Press the Tank Cover Open button, and then replace the ink tank.
    • When system cleaning was started manually:
    System cleaning could not be performed because the system cleaning function is disabled.
    Press the printer's RESUME/CANCEL button.

    Eighteen flashes:The ink is not enough to perform the system cleaning function
    • When system cleaning started automatically:
    The ink remaining level is not enough to perform the system cleaning function.
    Press the Tank Cover Open button, and then replace the ink tank.
    If printing is in progress and you want to continue printing, press and hold the printer's RESUME/CANCEL button for at least 5 seconds.
    Then printing can continue. However, if printing is continued, printing trouble such as unwanted lines or the complete stopping of ink ejection may occur.
    • When system cleaning was started manually:
    The ink remaining level is not enough to perform the system cleaning function.
    Press the Tank Cover Open button, and then replace the ink tank.
    If you want to stop the system cleaning, press the printer's RESUME/CANCEL button.

    Nineteen flashes:An unsupported USB hub is connected
    If a PictBridge compliant device is connected via a USB hub, remove the hub and connect it directly to the printer.
