Live View Shooting
With your camera, you can shoot while viewing a real-time image on the camera’s LCD monitor. This is called “Live View shooting.” This image can be magnified by 5x or 10x, so you can focus the camera more precisely.
In these instructions, we describe how to shoot looking at a real-time image on the camera’s LCD monitor, instead of looking through the viewfinder.
STEP I. Preparing for Live View Shooting
STEP II. Taking pictures focused on the subject
1. When using Live View shooting, using a hard disk-type card (such as MicroDrive) is not recommended. Use a CF card or a SD memory card instead.
2. If Live View shooting is done under direct sunlight or in other high temperature environments, the <
> icon (warning for high temperature in the camera) may appear on the screen. If Live View shooting continues with a high internal temperature, it could cause the image quality of the shots taken to degrade; so you should stop Live View shooting if the warning icon appears.
3. With a microdrive in the camera, if Live View shooting continues while the <
> warning icon is displayed and the camera’s internal temperature increases, Live View shooting will stop automatically to protect the hard disk from the heat.
Live View shooting will be disabled until the camera’s internal temperature decreases.
4. During Live View shooting, autofocusing functions cannot be used.
5. During Live View shooting, do not point the camera toward the sun. The sun’s heat can damage the camera’s internal components.
6. If you hold the camera like a compact digital camera and shoot while viewing the LCD monitor, camera shake can cause blurry images. For Live View Shooting, mounting the camera on a tripod is recommended.
7.If you shoot while the image brightness is not yet stable, the resulting image might be overexposed or underexposed.
8. High temperatures, high ISO speeds, or long exposures may cause noise or irregular colors in the images taken with Live View shooting.
9. During continuous shooting, the exposure set for the first shot will also be applied to subsequent shots. If you recompose during continuous shooting, the exposure might not match the latter shots.
STEP I. Preparing for Live View Shooting
1. Set the camera's power switch to <
> (Quick Control Dial Switch).
2. Set the lens focus mode switch to <MF>.
During Live View shooting, autofocusing functions cannot be used.
3. Make sure that the camera is ready to shoot, and then press the <MENU> button.
4. Turn the <Main Dial> to select the <
> tab. Next, turn the <Quick Control Dial> to select [Live View function settings], and then press the <SET> button.
5. Turn the <Quick Control Dial> to select [Live View shoot] from the displayed menu item, and then press the <SET> button.
6. Press the <SET> button again, and then turn the <Quick Control Dial> to select [Enable].
7. Press the <SET> button. Make sure that [Live View shoot-Enable] is set, and then press the <MENU> button twice.
8. Make sure that the menu display disappears, and then press the <SET> button. The Live View image will appear on the LCD monitor with a field of view of approximately 100%.
STEP II. Adjusting the focus to shoot
1. Move the focusing frame to the position where you want to focus.
Use <
> to select the focusing frame in full view.
If you press <
> straight down, the focusing frame will return to the center.
2. Press the <
> button to magnify the focusing frame.
The exposure in full view will be locked and the shutter speed and aperture settings will be displayed in orange.
Also, each time you press the <
> button, the display format will change as follows.
Full view → Approx. 5x → Approx. 10x
3. While looking at the Live View image on the LCD monitor, turn the focusing ring to focus manually.
4. Press the <
> button to check the image composition in full view.
5. Press the shutter button completely to take the picture.
The image you took will be displayed on the LCD monitor. After the image review ends, the camera will return to Live View shooting automatically.
To terminate shooting, press the <SET> button while Live View image is displayed.
The time it takes to actually take the picture after you press the shutter button completely is slightly longer than with normal shooting through the viewfinder.
When you press the shutter button completely, the shutter will make two shutter-release sounds (with flash, the reflex mirror and shutter operation make multiple sounds). However, only one shot is taken.
If you connect the camera to a PC that has the software supplied with the camera installed, you can shoot remotely while viewing the computer screen. For details, please see the related information.
This is the end of the instructions for Live View shooting.
